What teacher judgement is (and what it is not)

• Teacher judgement is an on-balance, holistic decision based on multiple sources of evidence.
• It is not a mathematical average of tasks, strands, or content descriptions.
• It is not based on effort alone (effort can be reported separately where your school includes it).

A 4-step VIC-friendly workflow

• Understand the achievement standard at and around the expected level.
• Plan assessment opportunities mapped to the achievement standard (not just the taught content).
• Collect evidence across the semester and triangulate (observations, tasks, tests, work samples).
• Moderate with colleagues, then assign the level score you can defend with evidence.

How to describe evidence in a parent-friendly way

Examples

• “During our persuasive writing unit, Maya used reasons and examples to support her viewpoint and revised her draft to improve clarity.”
• “In investigations, Liam recorded observations accurately and used evidence to explain patterns in results.”

Avoid

• “Maya is a lovely student.” (too subjective)
• “Liam tries hard.” (effort without learning evidence)
