VIC Student Reporting Requirements (Foundation to Year 10): What must be in the report

The 3 mandatory components for each curriculum area

In Victoria, school reports must include three mandatory components for every curriculum area taught:

• Teacher judgement: an on-balance, evidence-based level score against the Victorian Curriculum achievement standard.
• Progress indication: growth since the last report in that curriculum area.
• Five-point scale: a clear rating that helps parents understand achievement/progress.

Achievement standards vs content descriptions (the common mistake)

Victorian student reporting is against achievement standards. Content descriptions support planning and teaching, but they are not what you report against.

A strong comment describes what the student can do (evidence) and connects it to the achievement standard at the level reported.

Where the age-related five-point scale is required

• English: age-related five-point scale (where applicable).
• Mathematics: age-related five-point scale (where applicable).
• Science: age-related five-point scale (where applicable).
• Other learning areas/capabilities may use learning goals or learning dimensions scales.
• EAL uses an expected progress scale (no age-related scale).

What “plain English” looks like in reports

• Short, direct sentences.
• No unexplained jargon or acronyms.
• Specific examples (“can explain…”, “uses…”, “solves…”) rather than vague praise.
• Clear next steps that a parent can understand.
